A new restaurant has popped up on Whistler Street in Manly, and it’s already a local favourite! Creating a very NYC Little Italy vibe just off Manly Corso, Pocket Pizza is a cosy joint with red and white tablecloths, neon signage, exposed brickwork, succulent plants and black & white photographs streaming the walls. The highlight though is, of course, the food! Not only do Pocket Pizza pump out fresh, delicious pizza, but they also make some of the best salads and desserts! Gluten-free options are also aplenty which makes makes dining out in a group that much easier. Perfect for lunch or dinner, I recommend eating in to soak up the atmosphere and good tunes or taking away to the beachfront or harbour side.
The lunch and dinner menu varies quite a bit, with less pizza options, more salads and individual pizzas available for ordering at lunch time. If you’re a fan of the classic Margarita, you really can’t go past it – delicious thin base, creamy buffalo mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, toasty pine nuts and basil – perfection! At $10 for your own small pizza, it’s excellent value. My family are fans of the prawn pizza and the chicken parma burger, but I am yet to try those! If you’re after a gluten-free pizza, you’ll have to order it as a large size. The gluten-free bases are surprisingly good! Ordering some salads to share is of course a must, my absolute favourites being the Pomodorro and Greens (only available at lunch). The Pomodorro features perfectly vine ripened tomatoes, farro, goats curd, radicchio and mint (I’m currently devouring a takeaway container of this right now. Thank you, Mum). The Greens is a superb combination of mixed leaves, herbs, avocado, zucchini, broccoli, sprouts, seeds and salsa verde – it’s the best green salad I’ve ever had, the salsa verde just takes it to a whole other level. The Kale Caesar salad is also fantastic, but a bit too filling if you’re planning on having dessert, but it’s worth trying if you can share it amongst a few friends. Their lunch menu doesn’t currently have any dessert options, but if you ask they will most likely serve the Tiramisu or Banoffee Pie from their dinner menu. Both are just incredible!
If you’re coming for dinner, be sure to order some of the delicious snack items on the menu. The garlic bread is phenomenal – homemade garlic butter on a soft milk bun topped with finely grated parmesan. It will leave you weak at the knees and you will be tempted to order another one…but remember there is much more food to come! Other items include fried pickles, mini cheese & bacon burgers and cold cuts. Although I am yet to try these, I can attest that the mini burgers look awesome!
It’s worth mentioning that they are BYO as well, so bring along a few bottles of vino and you’ll be set!
