One of the absolute best brunch spots in Sydney, Reuben Hills has been serving up inventive, delicious South American food for years. In its inconspicuous location up Albion Street, the industrial style and decor seems to totally blend in with the Surry Hills atmosphere, yet surprise you at how much space the cafe holds. The ground floor eatery features polished concrete floors, exposed brick and timber beams and cosy little tables and timber chairs or the communal table down the opposite end. Food and drinks served in enamelware and vintage crockery create such a relaxed, humbling environment that settles you in for a nice long brunch with friends.
With some tweaks and changes to the menu upon each new visit, I am always tantalised by the menu but know that whatever I order, I will be left dumbfounded at how delicious it is. Favourites would most definitely include the avocado, coriander and lime on sourdough rye, the soft baked eggs with goats curd, kale & ranchero and the organic bircher muesli. My male companions generally opt for the fried chicken basket (breakfast or lunch…), the baleda or the dirty bird burger. Overall I think their savoury food tops the sweet.
Alongside your food, a coffee is without question as Reuben Hills’ roastery upstairs of the cafe create one of the best coffees in Sydney. And they cover everything from espressos, filters, cold brews and cocoa. If you’re not a coffee drinker, the Assam tea is lovely and the shakes are to die for – flavours change regularly but the salted caramel is a staple that has a bit of a cult following.
An absolute must visit for Sydney-siders and tourists alike, Reuben Hills will no-doubt impress you and have you planning your next visit straight away. With a brilliant location too, you can either wander up to Crown Street and onwards to Oxford Street, or head back down past Central and go to the White Rabbit Gallery for a 11 or 2 o’clock free tour (I have done both of these after going to Reuben Hills and they are both excellent ideas!)
Make sure you get there early, as Reuben Hills really does pack out, especially on the weekends.
