Fika Swedish Kitchen, Manly

Fika has become one of the most popular cafes in Manly for locals and tourists alike, and rightly so. The delightfully bright and cosy space with colour pops of yellow & blue, the glass cabinet filled with fresh cinnamon buns and the gorgeous, smiling Swedish owners creates such a wonderful atmosphere that will certainly keep you coming back as a regular. The quality of Fika’s food, staying true to its Swedish roots, creates such a delicious, interesting menu that really does bring a piece of Sweden to Manly.

I have been here countless times, mainly for coffee and breakfast. Their Campos coffee & amazing baristas always guarantee a top brew, but if I’m feeling like something a bit more refreshing on a hot day, their green juices or Birch water are excellent. Food wise, you really can’t go past the Salmon Lover, Knäckebröd or Prawn Skagen. The Salmon Lover is a serious crowd pleaser as the house-cured salmon is just divine and the poached egg is always oozy to perfection. The Knäckebröd is for a more refined palate – I absolutely love it because I love Swedish crispbread and the salty, fishy taste of Kalles caviar for breakfast. If you like the combination of avocado and prawns, then the Prawn Skagen is for you! Sourdough bread is served with half an avocado and a generous serving of light, creamy prawns. My brother just adores this dish!

For lunch, I really love their salads, otherwise I just order from the breakfast menu. But for dinner, their hot dishes are pure bliss! I had the crispy salmon with mash and dill peas as a special one night, and it was one of the most delicious meals I’ve ever had!  It’s not on their regular menu, but I’m sure the barramundi is just as good. Also keep an eye out for crayfish specials which appear at certain times of the year! The wines on offer are excellent, a memorable one being a crisp, dry Riesling they have which goes so well with the seafood dishes on the menu. And for dessert, well I would say that ‘Grandma Elly’s Apple Pie’ is pretty hard to pass up, especially alongside a little Campos piccolo latte!

An absolute must for any visitor or local to Manly, I hope you enjoy Fika as much as I do! It’s in a wonderful location too, so why not head over to Desire Books for a second hand novel or record, or through the arcade to the Manly Fresh Produce Markets on a Wednesday or Sunday, or maybe check out the Saltmotion gallery just a few doors up?
